Book Review: Born Again Sinner by Daryl Banner

There is something on my mind and today it is a book review of Daryl Banner’s Born Again Sinner.

I am a huge fan of Daryl Banner’s books and Born Again Sinner did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this book.

I was given an ARC copy of this book by the author but when it was released on June 1, I also purchased a copy, because I like to support my favourite authors.

Whenever I receive an ARC from Daryl I love to jump right in, and I usually drop whatever book I’m reading, but this time I was in the middle of a business trip with lots of on and of planes and full days so I knew it had to wait until I got home. Once I start one of Daryl’s books I usually can’t stop until I’ve finished, and Born Again Sinner was no different.

This book is a beautiful story of two people finding love.

Cody Davis, returned from active duty in the army with a medical discharge after being injured. Cody struggles with his injuries and refuses physical therapy. He is known as the town bad boy with most of the town scared of him. He slips into a state where he doesn’t leave his house and drinks away his feelings.

Trey Arnold, the preachers son, has struggled with his own issues, but came out to his father as gay after he officiated the town’s first gay wedding, and the town and his father showed how accepting they were. But is his fathers acceptance only for public show and can he cope with his son’s sexuality behind close doors. This is something Trey is still trying to work out.

When Cody’s mother hires Trey to be Cody’s nurse neither of them could envisage the road they would end up taking together. Cody was not willing to accept help, and had already scared away five nurses, but Trey saw something in Cody, apart from the fact he was super hot, something that made him want to keep helping him. and thus began the rollercoaster ride Trey and Cody would take to find each other.

Once I started this book I didn’t want to put it down. Daryl’s writing had me on the edge of my seat. This book has a bit of everything, but ultimately it is a beautiful story of two people finding each other, while also finding themselves, and the lengths one will go to for love.

I gave this book five stars

Book Review: Tonight by Karen Stivali

There  is something on my mind and today it is a book review for Tonight by Karen Stivali.

Tonight was recommended recently in a Facebook readers group and I saw it was free on Amazon at the time so I took advantage of the free book, one-clicked it and read it instantly. That was a few weeks ago but I never got around to posting the review….until now.

The Blurb;

David has loved his older brother Derek’s BFF, Wiley, since the first day he met him, five long lust-filled years ago. But, as Derek never hesitates to point out, Wiley is straight.

When Wiley has a falling out with his roommate and winds up crashing on David and Derek’s couch for a month, he’s a 24/7 reminder of what David wants but fears he’ll never have. Until one afternoon when David has a major art project to finish and a model who’s a no-show. Wiley offers to pose for him—and it sure feels like the heat between them is mutual.

Could Derek have been wrong about his best friend for all these years? Would David’s dreams about Wiley finally come true? The only thing David knows is that one way or another he’ll find out for sure…tonight.

The book was written as part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s “Love is an Open Road” initiative where group members are asked to choose a photo and write a short letter asking for an M/M romance story inspired by the picture. Authors can select from the submitted letters and write an original story.

David has been in love with his older brother Derek’s best friend Wiley since he was 16,  but Derek is constantly reminding ‘Davey’ “He’s not gay, you know”……or is he. Well, I guess we know the answer to that from reading the blurb but how these two get together is an unexpected and exciting turn of events.

It is really hard to say much more about this book without giving away spoilers, which I hate doing, so let just say things get a little heated, which I loved, after a shirtless Wiley poses for David’s art project after a third model fails to turn up.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, but it still drew me in and I was invested in the characters. I really wish there was more.  I liked it so much I just read it again before posting this review.

Book Review – Darker by EL James

There is something on my mind and today it is a book review of Darker by EL James

4.5 Stars

Anyone who is a reader and lover of the romance genre would have read, or at least heard of The Fifty Shades trilogy and know about Anastasia and Christian’s journey. This book, Darker, as you know is Fifty Shades Darker from Christian’s point of view.

Being a fan of the Fifty Shades Trilogy, and loving Grey, the first book from Christian’s point of view, I was eager to ready this one although I didn’t initially buy it as I didn’t want to read the eBook for this one.

Anyone who read my post about Books vs eBooks would know I read the Fifty Shades of Grey series books, borrowed from my sister. I read Grey the same way so I was going to read Darker also from a ‘real’ book. The only problem was I’d broken my glasses and they had packed so much into the 546 page paperback that the print was so small I couldn’t read it. So I had to wait……..and wait………and wait.

I recently got new glasses so I sat down this week to read this book.

I loved Christian’s point of view in Darker so much more than the original version. It gives us such an insight into Christian’s mind, and why he did or said certain things in the original book that may have left you wondering about. I know it had left me wondering.

I was particularly interested in Christian’s POV regarding, lets call it ‘the helicopter incident’, just in case anyone hasn’t read it, and I was not disappointed. I loved this part of the book so much, how Christian was feeling and his thought process in getting back to Ana, and how he was shocked with the emotion of his family, and Ana over this ‘incident’.

Although I have loved the series from Christian’s POV much more than the original three books, I’m not sure I would have if I only read Christian’s POV. I think to gain maximum benefit and understanding of this character you need to read the original trilogy before reading Grey, and then Darker.

Looking forward to the third book from Christian’s POV.

I gave it 4.5 stars. It’s more than a 4 but not quite up to my 5, but I did love this book.

I don’t think I need to give you links for this series. Go to your local bookshop or search your eBook retailer.

Book Review – Protected: A Second Chance Baby Daddy Romance by Kelli Walker

There is something on my mind and today it is a book review of Protected: A Second Chance Baby Daddy Romance by Kelli Walker. This book was released today 6th May 2018.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and in exchange for an honest review.

Let’s start with the blurb for this book;

I’m being stalked like an animal, and my ex wants to protect me.
My life is crumbling at my feet, and all I can do is look over my shoulder.
Stopping.
Staring.
Fearing for my life.
Then, my ex comes knocking at my door.
Promising he can keep me safe.
With his thick muscles and his brooding stare and a body whose crevices call to mine.
The man who broke my heart wants to shield me from the man who broke my mind.
A man I married.
Trusted.
Divorced.
I can’t say no, but I want to.
I have to say ‘no’, but I can’t.
And when he injures himself keeping his vow, I can’t push him away.
I was being tracked and he never left me.
So I refuse to leave him.
I guess some things never change.

Alicia Whitley has been hiding from her abusive ex-husband Langley for a year, until he finds her. With help from her lawyer a protective security company is engaged to protect her, only the owner of the company is the man who broker her heart, her ex-boyfriend Ryder Smith.

Protected is the story of Alicia’s struggling with losing control of her life again to allow Ryder to protect her, and Ryder’s determination to protect her at all costs, and the stormy relationship that develops out of that.

Fed up with having her life controlled, Alicia struggles to let Ryder do his job and protect her, feeling that he is just another man trying to tell her what to do. This necessity to take back control of her life comes at a time where she is putting herself and Ryder in danger by doing so.

Ryder’s feelings for Alicia never left him and he risks everything to keep her safe, but when he is injured protecting her Alicia steps up and will not leave his side during his recovery.

I enjoyed this story, it was emotional, suspenseful, and the author takes the reader on the adventure with the characters to find each other again. Told from both points of view of the two main characters brings a greater level of emotional connection to both characters.

I did find it a little confronting in regards to the domestic violence aspect and this could be triggering to survivors of domestic violence.

When I read the blurb I thought this book sounded exciting, and it was but there were a few of things that detracted from the story for me;

These could contain **SPOILERS** so if you don’t like spoilers please don’t read any further, but it made a difference to my expectations for the book and my enjoyment of the outcome

First, having ‘baby daddy’ as part of the title of the book to me sets a certain expectation that there will be a pregnancy. I spent the whole book waiting for the pregnancy and was disappointed that it was only in the epilogue.

Second, it may be my interpretation but when I read this section of the blurb;

The man who broke my heart wants to shield me from the man who broke my mind. A man I married. Trusted. Divorced. I can’t say no, but I want to.

I read that as the ex who wanted to protect her was a previous husband not a high school boyfriend she hasn’t seen since she was 16 (about 15 years). I’m not sure why but that changed my perspective of the earlier relationship between Ryder and Alicia. I think it’s more how the blurb is written to set the expectation that is was a long term relationship and Ryder broke her trust before they divorced.   (I’d like to know what you all think of this. Do you interpret it the same way as I do, or differently? Leave a comment and let me know)

Lastly, there were some inconsistencies with a secondary character, Alicia’s best friend Becca which caused a bit of confusion. Firstly,  when talking about Alicia’s state of mind after the break up with Ryder in high school it states “I rebelled throughout my last two years of my high school career and had it not been for Becca, I never would’ve made it to college” giving the understanding Alicia and Becca were high school friends.

Later, Alicia states she met Becca her freshman year of college and when talking to Becca about Ryder, Becca asks his name. she and Alicia discuss it and Becca says “You’re my best friend and he hurt you. It doesn’t matter if we weren’t friends when he hurt you.”  Both these points contradicting what was mentioned earlier in the book.

This is followed by another conversation a few chapters later where Alicia again explains to Becca she dated Ryder in high school and the conversation illudes to the fact Becca didnt know who Ryder was (again contradicting the previous point)

This did detract from the story somewhat because I had to keep going back and forth with chapters to check that what I thought I had read previously was actually what I’d read. It was confusing.

Because of these issues I gave it 3.5 stars, otherwise I would have given it 4.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and would still recommend it to lovers of second chance romance.  You can get the book at;

Book Review: Undefeated by Stuart Reardon and Jane Harvey-Berrick

There is something on my mind and today it’s a book review of Undefeated by Stuart Reardon and Jane Harvey-Berrick.

Many of us might know Stuart Reardon through his Rugby League career or fitness program, or even as a book cover model. This is Stuart’s first book as an author, and his co-writer Jane Harvey Berrick is a new-to-me author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

As a fan of Stuart I was excited to read this book when it was released on 23 January 2018, but when I started it I had trouble getting into it. I am not a huge fan of sports romances, and this is not the usual type of book I would read, but I wanted to read it, well……………..because Stuart.

I found it started a little slow, it didn’t grip me from the beginning like a good book would, so I got distracted from it and I put it aside to come back to it later, which I did this week, and I’m glad I did. I enjoyed the book and give it 4 stars.

four stars

The Blurb

A powerful contemporary romance set in the fast-moving world of international rugby.

When your world crashes down
When they all say you’re out
When your body is broken
I will rise.
I will return.
And I will be undefeated.

Nick Renshaw is the golden boy of British rugby. When a serious injury threatens his career, he starts to spiral downwards, a broken man.
Feeling abandoned and betrayed by those closest to him, he fights to restart his life. Maybe there’s someone out there who can help him. Maybe he can find his way back toward the light. Maybe … not.
Dr. Anna Scott might be the one person who can help Nick, but she has her own secrets. And when Nick’s past comes back to haunt them both, the enigmatic doctor is more vulnerable than she seems.
Broken and betrayed, the struggle to survive seems intolerable. Who will give in, and who will rise, undefeated?

Once the story grabbed me, and it did a few chapters in, I  really enjoyed it. There was an instant chemistry between the two main characters Nick and Anna and despite various roadblocks meant to keep them apart they had an attraction that was so strong they risked everything to be together.

It was emotional, suspenseful and highlights how the electronic media and social media can control the outcome of a situation and distribute an opinion, or misrepresent facts in such a short time frame, effectively destroying a persons reputation for something they didn’t do.

Undefeated is an extremely powerful story about overcoming your darkest moments and rising up to be your best self, overcoming doubt and fear and all in the public eye.

I did find some of the sports scenes a little long.  I would rather more interaction between the main characters than details about a Rugby game, but that’s just my personal preference and it did’t detract from the story, but for me it didn’t add a great deal either.

Although there were aspect of this book that were not my preference, I still enjoyed it, and recommend it, particularly if you are a fan of sports romance. You can get your copy here;

Book Review: Baby Daddy: Everything I Want by Kelli Walker

There’s something on my mind and today it’s a book review of Kelli Walker’s Baby Daddy: Everything I want. This book was released today, 14th April 2018.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had reviewed one of Kelli Walkers books before and I didn’t completely enjoy it so I was hoping this book would be better, and it was. I give it 3.5 stars.

Joanna Leone is an up and coming opera star in the middle of a tour of the opera Turandot on the verge of achieving her dreams.

Robert Cargill is a self made, very rich, CEO with a questionable past he is not proud of, which is catching up with him. He is also the typical rich playboy, takes what he wants from whoever he wants, when he wants.

Both Robert and Joanna had had a difficult childhood, both were orphans and had made the best of their lives on their own, working their way towards their goals.

When Robert’s best friend drags him to the New York performance of Turandot it is the start of major changes in both Robert and Joanna’s lives.

Backstage Robert goes after what he wants, the beautiful and talented Joanna. He  seduces innocent Joanna resulting in pregnancy.  When someone from his past starts threatening Joanna and his unborn child Robert does everything he can to protect them.
This story of their blossoming romance from a one night stand is intense, suspenseful and at times emotional.
I enjoyed this book, I didn’t love it, but I think it’s still worth a read if you are a lover of suspenseful romance. It’s currently $0.99 on Amazon, $1.28 on AmazonAU, so now is the time to get it if you want to, I don’t know if this price is temporary.

Book Review: Daddy Issues by Seth King

There’s something on my mind and today it is a book review for Seth King’s Daddy Issues that was released on 12 April 2018 (11 April in the USA).

When I read the excerpts Seth King posted on his author page, I had high expectations for this book and as usual Seth did not disappoint.

I waited impatiently until release date and then rushed to AmazonAU as soon as I saw it had been released. Being in Australia when Seth releases a new book it is usually during our night or early morning so I often, after waiting impatiently for book release, have to wait even more impatiently, with the book sitting on my kindle teasing me, while work and adulting interrupts the time I ‘should’ be reading. So when Daddy Issues was released I had to wait all day at work, and then in the evening taking care of family and other things before I could actually start. It was torture!!!!!!!

Finally, just after midnight I started reading and after the very first page I knew I wasn’t getting any sleep last night. Apart from breaks to make more coffee, I didn’t stop until I was finished. So I sit this morning, tear tracks still staining my cheeks, writing this review having not slept,  because after finishing this book WHO COULD SLEEP!!!!!!!!!

22 year old Elliot Prince and 41 year old Robert Glazer had an instant attraction when they met following the death of Elliot’s grandmother.  Only it wasn’t the first time they were meeting.  Ten years previous, Robert had been married to Elliot’s mother for a very short time before he accepted his sexuality and told her he was gay. During the marriage Elliot barely knew Robert as he lived with his father and didn’t spend much time with his mother. Despite this fact they still felt it was wrong to pursue each other and tried to fight the attraction which only grew stronger until they were craving each other.

Daddy Issues is a beautiful love story told from both Elliot and Robert points of view, which I really loved because it gave the reader an insight into what both characters were thinking and feeling during this emotional roller coaster of a story.

daddy issues teaser

It is really hard to review a Seth King book and tell you what I loved without using spoilers, and there was so much that I loved that I can’t tell you. You have to experience this book for yourself.

This book is funny, emotional, suspenseful, family drama and had me crying sad and happy tears. I would expect nothing else from Seth King’s writing. It’s one of the things I love most about Seth’s work is that he makes the reader feel what his characters are feeling.

There are some steamy scenes in this book, but I think it is just enough to enhance the story and not there for the sake of it. Although I am not opposed to some hotness.

I wanted to read it slowly to savour the first time read and at the same time read it quickly because I needed to know the plight of these characters. As usual the need  to know in me won and I read the book quickly. The ending was the worst part about this book, because it ended and it left me wanting more.

This is another 5-star book from Seth King and that’s only because the rating doesn’t go higher.

five stars

There was one chapter I was reading where I kept thinking back to Seth’s book Curious. I still had an image in my head from Curious that I couldn’t shift, and if you have read it, it’s where Nathan was in the nursing home reading the letter from Beau. A scene to this day I have etched in my brain.

Well, as I’m reading this particular chapter of Daddy Issues, unable to shake that scene from Curious, tears streaming down my face and I’m saying to myself, I hope this is a dream, I hope this isn’t real, over and over. When I finished the chapter and read the next one I was both surprised and delighted by the outcome. I cant say any more without giving away spoilers, but I think fans of Seth’s work, particularly Curious, will understand what I mean. I cant believe he did it to us again, but I loved it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good love story because love is love and age is just a number. You can get Daddy Issues free on Kindle Unlimited or at the following links;

Book Review: Bad Boy: You Are Not Alone by Kelli Walker

There’s something on my mind and its a book review of Bad Boy: You are not alone by Kelli Walker

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

And honestly, I’m not sure what to make of this book. I was not familiar with the author nor had I read the blurb before I started so I was going in blind.

I liked the story but I wasn’t able to relate completely with the characters because I feel that the characters were already established so I was missing something about the relationships and how they all know each other, other than they met in college. It’s like this should be part of a series only when I looked I couldn’t find one. and I did look, everywhere (Goodreads Amazon google)

It begins at what seems to be some sort of erotic or BDSM party on an island owned by Tina. Tina and Kevin, who are in some sort of relationship, are hosting but not partaking in the festivities.

I found it a little confusing throughout the book trying to work out the relationship between Tina and Kevin, apart from at the end, actually the very last page, when it mentions Tina is Kevin’s sub and seems to have been for fifteen years. Apart from the odd reference to Sir I didn’t get that impression when I was reading it.

The story centres around Tina after her father passes away. Tina struggles with the death of her father, issues with her mother, arranging the funeral, and inheriting her father’s company. It is an emotional struggle for Tina and her friends, including Kevin rally round and support her and that part of the story I enjoyed.

There were some editing/typing errors but for an ARC that is sometimes to be expected but I was more confused when they started talking about a wedding and then realised the writer referred to the “wedding”, instead of the “funeral”

After finishing the book I read the blurb and was more confused.

The Blurb

“When five rich friends from college made a promise to take three vacations together every year, every single of one them thought it would be nothing but parties. Their sexcapades on their private island soon became famous around the globe, and politicians, actresses, and other elites were invited to partake in their debauchery-filled blowouts. As tales of the island began to swirl in the small Italian villages, drama kicks up on the island when Tina and Kevin– two lovers with a sordid past dating all the way back to their college years– hook up again and send sparks flying so high into the sky that it startles the small towns of Italy. Will they be able to navigate this tumultuous time? Will Tina be able to drop her icy cold walls and give Kevin the answers he’s been begging for? Or will Kevin give up and leave her behind for good?”

This blurb does not describe the book I had just read. I recall no mention of Italy in the book, nor the sordid past dating of Kevin and Tina, and nothing that startles the small towns of Italy.

Also the book is only available in paperback. you can search Amazon for it if you so desire, but I don’t necessarily recommend it.

All in all I’d have to say I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. It was OK. It’s probably a  2.5 star book.

Book Review – Teaching Roman by Geneva Lee

I have something on my mind and today its Teaching Roman by Geneva Lee.

Teaching Roman is the third in the Good Girls Don’t series. The first, Catching Liam and the follow up novella Unwrapping Liam, are two of my favourite Geneva books, so I had high hopes for this book, and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved it. i gave it 5 stars

five stars

Jessica Stone is a pre-med student, reliable, focused, had her five year plan and it doesn’t include boys.

Roman Markson is a sexy Phd student, and also a communications teacher.

This is a beautiful story of two people who think they shouldn’t be together because Roman is a teacher, and Jessica is a student at the same university.  When they meet up by chance in Mexico they think they can have one week together and then go back to their lives. But can they?

“How was I suppose to stick to my guns with him walking around like a sun-bronzed god?”

It’s hard to tell you why I loved this book without giving spoilers. Geneva takes these characters through some turmoil but she takes the readers with them. I had my heart in my mouth for some of this book. At times I wanted to shake Jessica and tell her to wake up to  herself, yet I cant tell you why.

“His chocolate brown eyes smoldered into mine, and I forgot to breathe.”

I laughed and I cried, and I really loved the ending,  but it left me wanting more.

My favourite line is

“It wasn’t my first kiss. It wasn’t our first kiss. But it was the first kiss that ever mattered.”

I highly recommend this book. Grab your copy now.
